After Larkin requested a trade from Detroit, the organization has maintained that it will do what it believes is best. However, after Steve Yzerman‘s exit as general manager, the Red Wings could consider a surprising move.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman believes there is a world where the new Detroit general manager wants to sit down with Larkin and change his mind, but that is uncertain right now, as the insider said on NHL Tonight. This was one of the most popular theories on why the Red Wings moved on from Yzerman as the general manager.
So, could Larkin really return to Detroit after requesting a trade?

When Yzerman moved to a senior advisory role to Chris Ilitch, one of the most popular ideas was that Detroit picked Larkin over the former general manager. However, could the Red Wings convince the 29-year-old captain to stay? Also, would Detroit really want to bring back Larkin after his trade request?
It seems like a long shot. Larkin has been heavily linked to the Minnesota Wild, which consists of several USA Olympic teammates. After missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs again, Larkin’s success at the Olympics may have sparked his desire to join a win-now team. There might be no way that Larkin changes his mind.
However, what if Larkin does change his mind and withdraw his trade request? If this were to occur, it could be an unpopular decision to bring Larkin back into the locker room. After all, it would be impossible to ignore the captain of the Red Wings requesting a trade. It might not be healthy for the locker room, even if it does help Detroit in its pursuit of making the 2027 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
While a new general manager might attempt to save the position with Larkin, it might not be worth saving. The damage could already be done. Ultimately, moving on might be what is best for both sides, even if Yzerman’s departure as general manager influences Larkin to withdraw his trade request.
It is unfortunate that Larkin and Detroit have reached this point, but this might be a one-way road now.
