David Warner's cricket career might have hit another roadblock, with the former Australian opening batsman at serious risk of losing the Sydney Thunder captaincy after pleading guilty to a mid-range drink-driving charge.
At a local court in Sydney on Wednesday, legal counsel Bobby Hill formally entered a guilty plea on behalf of the 39-year-old, who was not present in court. The charge follows an incident on Easter Sunday (April 5), when police intercepted Warner's vehicle in Sydney's eastern suburb of Maroubra. Police reports noted that Warner pulled over short of a roadside random breath-testing site before being approached by officers.
A secondary breath analysis conducted at a local police station recorded a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.104—more than double Australia's legal limit of 0.05.
Addressing media outside the court, Hill stated that Warner took full responsibility for a "reckless and foolish decision" to drive home after consuming three glasses of wine at a friend's flat, finishing his final drink just 11 minutes before getting behind the wheel rather than ordering a rideshare service.
While formal sentencing is set for August 18, under New South Wales law, a first-offence mid-range PCA conviction carries a maximum penalty of up to nine months imprisonment, fines reaching A$2,200, and an automatic driving disqualification of six to 12 months.

Also, the immediate sporting ramifications threaten Warner's leadership role at the Sydney Thunder ahead of the upcoming Big Bash League season.
The conviction creates a direct conflict with Cricket NSW, which maintains a high-profile commercial and community partnership with the New South Wales Government advocating for road safety.
"The allegations are of course concerning and we take them very seriously," Cricket NSW Chief Executive Lee Germon said in a statement. "At Cricket NSW, we are strong advocates for safe driving, not drink-driving."
The leadership post itself remains uniquely sensitive. Warner only regained eligibility to hold an official leadership position in Australian cricket in late 2024, after Cricket Australia reviewed and rescinded the lifetime ban imposed on him following the 2018 Cape Town ball-tampering scandal. A second high-profile disciplinary breach severely compromises the institutional backing required to retain the captaincy.
Cricket NSW and Sydney Thunder officials are expected to review Warner's captaincy status following the court's sentencing next month.
