David Potter, who has died aged 81, was the South Africa-born scientist turned electronics entrepreneur behind the Psion Organiser, a pioneering 1980s advance in portable computing.

Small enough to be carried in a shirt pocket but sufficiently powerful for a wide range of business tasks, the Psion device launched in 1984 was an icon of executive life in its era, far ahead of the ubiquitous Blackberry and now-forgotten PalmPilot “personal digital assistants” of the late 1990s. The Organiser’s use of EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) chips was the forerunner of the miniaturised memory card in today’s digital cameras.

Potter himself disguised a formidable intellect behind a thoughtful, soft-spoken manner; he was also driven by a strong social conscience. Though Psion made him wealthy, “the purpose that got him up in the morning,” wrote one observer, “was to create something useful that people needed” rather than the extraction of profit.

Beyond electronics, he had the rare distinction for a self-made entrepreneur of serving from 2003 to 2009 on the Court (that is, as a non-executive director) of the Bank of England – and having observed the origins of 2008 crisis from that vantage point, he made no secret of his contempt for the unproductive excesses of the financial world. That view was captured in the punchline of an interview he gave in 2012, quoting a 1936 speech by Franklin D Roosevelt attacking quasi-monopoly power in finance: “Let’s welcome the enmity of bankers.”

David Edwin Potter was born on July 4 1943 in East London, South Africa, to Paul Potter and his wife Mary, née Snape. Paul died when David was a toddler; the academic influences in his early Cape Town childhood were his grandfather, a professor of civil engineering, and his grandmother, one of South Africa’s first female classics graduates. When David was 10 and his mother remarried, they moved to Salisbury, Rhodesia (now Harare, capital of Zimbabwe), where he was educated at Prince Edward School.

At 19, after a year at the university of Cape Town, David came to England on a Beit scholarship to study natural sciences at Trinity College, Cambridge, going on as a Commonwealth scholar to complete a doctorate in mathematical physics at Imperial College London.

An interest in chaos theory and “non-linear phenomenon”, extending to the structure of galaxies, drew him into computational physics, on which he published a book in 1972. He lectured at Imperial throughout the 1970s with a secondment in 1974-75 as an assistant professor at UCLA in California – where his imagination was fired by “the beginning of the chip”.

Shrewd investment in the recovering stock market of the mid-1970s, including an unlikely stake in one of the UK’s first duvet manufacturers, provided Potter with sufficient capital by 1980 to exercise an innate commercial instinct and found his first business: Potter Scientific Instruments, which in due course became Psion – the “Psi” acronym appealing to him as the Greek letter which is also a symbol for the wave function in quantum mechanics.

With his first colleague, Charles Davies, Potter began developing “really quite interesting bits of software”. Success followed in the form of computer games sold via Acorn and Sinclair Research, the early leaders in UK personal computer hardware. By its third year, Psion was making handsome profits – but writing games software was insufficient as a goal for a talented team who wanted to “add value in a wider social sense”.

Potter and Davies turned their minds to building a truly portable computing device, setting their designers four challenges: size, weight, battery life and “when you turn the machine off it’s got to keep its memory.” The result was the first Organiser, marketed at £99 with six kilobytes of memory. The more powerful Organiser II followed in various versions, finding commercial use inter alia for managers of Marks & Spencer stores. Psion launched on the stock exchange in 1988 with a valuation of £17 million.

Potter’s other major entrepreneurial venture, created in 1998, was the Symbian consortium – a collaboration between Psion, Nokia of Finland, Ericsson of Sweden, Motorola of the US and other partners to develop “digital assistant” technology into operating systems for first-generation smartphones. Eventually acquired by Nokia, Symbian was recognised in its industry as a bold concept that was overwhelmed by the competitive might of Apple iPhone and Google Android products.

Potter stood down as chief executive of Psion in 1999 for health reasons but remained chairman until 2009. At the peak of the dotcom boom in 2000, Forbes magazine listed him as a dollar billionaire; later estimates of his fortune were smaller but still substantial, funding philanthropy that included a private charitable trust to support education and research and an endowment to the London Business School for a chair in entrepreneurship. In the early 2000s he was also a prominent Labour Party donor.

Psion itself, latterly specialising in “rugged” mobile devices for industrial uses, was sold for $200 million in 2012 to Motorola. Pondering in 2016 as to why British digital entrepreneurs of his generation were largely unable to build world-scale businesses, Potter observed that “in hindsight, we weren’t American enough… What they have is a culture and infrastructure which is very focused on taking enormous risks.”

Potter’s progressive commitment to the public good was reflected in a portfolio of other roles – as vice-chairman of the Press Association, a founder trustee of the Bureau of Investigative Journalism and a benefactor of the OpenDemocracy media platform. A member of the Dearing Committee on Higher Education and the Cabinet Office council for science and technology, and a governor of the London Business School, he was honoured by a dozen universities.

He was awarded the Mountbatten Medal for Outstanding Services to the Electronics Industry in 1994 and was appointed CBE in 1997.

Potter was a treasured and generous friend in the small circle of those who knew him well. For relaxation he enjoyed tennis, golf, playing the flute and playing bridge at the Portland Club. He married a journalist, Elaine Goldberg, in 1969. She survives him with their three sons.
