Danny DeVito and Colin Farrell discussed their experiences as Batman villain The Penguin in Batman Returns and The Batman
In the conversation, part of Variety‘s Actors on Actors series, DeVito recalled cooking on set during the two months he worked on the film
On one occasion, DeVito stopped a scene to make sure his assistant tended to his pasta sauce, cooking in his trailer
Danny DeVito was juggling a lot on the Batman Returns set.
In his conversation with Colin Farrell for Variety‘s Actors on Actors series, the pair discussed how long filming took for their respective Batman films. Farrell, 50, who also starred in the HBO series The Penguin, couldn’t film every day because of his skin’s reaction to the makeup. In contrast, DeVito, 80, said, “I was there every day, for 66 days.”
“In makeup, cooking pasta in the afternoon, having meals, making meatballs,” he continued, recalling a moment where he actually stopped a scene to make sure his food was being minded.
“I’m in the middle of a scene in the Penguin’s lair, and this wonderful guy who worked with me, Josh Levinson, who has been my friend forever and he’s worked with me since the beginning of time. He’s a terrific guy, and he’s on set. I got penguins all around me and I go, ‘Somebody get Josh,’ ” DeVito recalled.
“I got them all in the middle, I’ve got drool. Josh comes over. He’s like ‘What the f--k’s the matter? What’s the matter with Dan? What the hell is the matter with Danny?’ He goes through all these catwalks. There’s water all around us and he comes all the way out, he walks all the way down these planks,” he continued.
“He goes, ‘What is it, Dan?’ And I said, ‘Stir the sauce.’ He had to go back to the trailer to stir the tomato sauce.”

Elsewhere in the conversation, DeVito talked about working with Michelle Pfeiffer. “She was a goddess,” said DeVito, who played the villainous Penguin opposite Pfeiffer’s Catwoman and Michael Keaton‘s Batman. “If I knew she was going to be in a scene that day …” he trailed off.
Pfeiffer, now 67, was “just so wonderful. And I lusted after her,” DeVito added. He then agreed with Farrell that it was his character, Oswald Cobblepot a.k.a. the Penguin, who was doing the lusting.
“I kind of feel like she liked it. She liked Oswald,” DeVito said.
