For Texas customers stopping by their local CVS to fill a prescription or grab a quick snack, their next visit may look very different.
The pharmacy giant has unveiled a first-of-its-kind store concept that abandons its traditional drugstore model in favor of a format centered almost entirely on healthcare.
CVS opened the new pharmacy-focused location in Houston, Texas, where shoppers will immediately notice what's missing.
Unlike a traditional CVS stocked with snacks, greeting cards, seasonal décor, beauty products and household essentials, the new store dramatically reduces its retail selection to make room for expanded pharmacy services, prescription fulfillment and health-related products.
The store, located on Gulf Freeway in south Houston, is designed to make it faster and easier for customers to fill prescriptions and receive vaccinations. This will be the first of nearly 20 pharmacy-focused locations expected to pop up across the country.
The new storefront is also significantly smaller than a traditional CVS, showing the company's broader push toward healthcare rather than general retail.
'Community pharmacists are often the most accessible healthcare professionals in the communities they serve,' CVS said in a statement.
'Our new pharmacy-focused locations optimize how we engage with communities by expanding access to trusted care, clinical expertise, and personalized support,' the statement continues. 'We help people get the guidance, medications, and pharmacy care services they need where, when and how they need it most.'
This move represents a notable shift for the retailer, whose stores have long doubled as neighborhood convenience shops where customers could grab everything from candy and soft drinks to cosmetics and birthday cards while waiting for prescriptions.
The Houston opening also comes after CVS announced plans to introduce smaller-format pharmacies as part of a broader strategy to adapt its store footprint to changing consumer habits.
Traditional drugstores faced growing pressure from online retailers, grocery chains and discount stores that chipped away at in-store sales.
At the same time, pharmacies have become an increasingly important part of the healthcare system, providing vaccinations, health screenings and medication counseling that once required a doctor's office visit.
CVS said its new concept is geared toward those changing needs, allowing pharmacists and staff to focus on healthcare services thanks to a smaller retail footprint.
The company confirmed that the pharmacy-focused stores will complement, not replace, its traditional locations, with additional sites expected to open in markets where the format best serves local communities.
For customers who prefer browsing shelves for impulse purchases while picking up a prescription, however, the new concept marks a noticeable departure from the classic CVS experience.
For the Houston area in particular, the pharmacy comes as a welcome addition to the community, with one Reddit user writing, 'this is nice.
'That area been dry for pharmacies,' they added. 'My uncle stay over there struggling to get his scripts, this should help.'
This Houston-specific location was an intentional choice by CVS, as the retailer noted 80 percent of patients prefer face-to-face pharmacy care.
Nearly half of people surveyed, about 48 percent, said they would switch pharmacies if it was limited to digital-only options.
'In the expansive Greater Houston metropolitan area, being able to walk into any of our pharmacies, speak directly with a pharmacist, and have in-person access to pharmacy services is important,' Thanh Hoang, Pharmacy Manager at CVS Pharmacy, said.
'Our pharmacists live and work within the communities they serve and because authentic connections are created through meaningful interactions, patients and customers trust their local pharmacy teams,' he added.
Today, CVS is considered one of the largest retail pharmacy stores in the US, with 8,980 locations nationwide as of July.
