Creator Kaydee Church transforms plain wooden stools into oversized buttons using paint and a drill—a fun, budget-friendly weekend DIY project.

I’ve seen themed stools all over the internet that look like everything from large pieces of fruit to stacks of books. When I came across these button stools by TikTok creator Kaydee Church (@kaydeechurch), I thought they’d be the perfect addition to any playroom, sewing area, or other whimsical space.

With her husband's help, Church modifies simple wooden stools to mimic brightly colored buttons. The DIY is quick, can be made on a budget, and the end results really pop.

What You Need

Church has 3 identical wooden stools, but you can thrift or source them from anywhere. Uniform stools would look cute, but they don’t have to match for this project to still work.

You’ll Need:

  • Wooden stools (as many as you want to make)
  • Brightly colored acrylic paint
  • A hole saw
  • Drill
  • Sandpaper

Her husband drilled four holes into each stool with a hole saw to mimic buttonholes. She then removed the legs, scuffed up the button part of the stool with sandpaper, and painted each top. When it was dry, she reattached the legs. That’s it!

The most involved part of this DIY is drilling the holes in the stool seat. Once that’s done, the rest of the project is easy enough that you can do it yourself or have the kiddos help.

Make sure to drill, sand, and paint in a well-ventilated area. Consider wearing a mask and protective eyewear to prevent sawdust from getting into your eyes and mouth.

Make It Your Own

Church sticks with solid colors, but these would look cute painted with designs like flowers, needlework, animals, bugs, or anything else that matches the theme of your space. I’ve been looking for a stool for my sewing room, and I think this would be the perfect addition!

I like the simple design Church does, but you could go a step further with the button theme and create a border along the seat with buttons or cover the entire top in them. If you wanted a mosaic feel, you could even use grout or resin to fill in the space around the buttons for a smooth seat.

If you’ve been looking for a quick, whimsical design that’s also functional, these little button stools Church created definitely fit the bill.
