Decades later, one unforgettable rock anthem continues earning praise from critics and longtime music fans.

In 1967, the members of the band that has been ranked the best supergroup in music history released a hit song that has continued to be celebrated for decades. The track gets so much respect that it has been named one of the best classic rock songs ever released and praised for featuring one of the greatest guitar solos of all time.

Who Named Cream's 1967 Track 'Sunshine of Your Love' One of the 'Best Classic Rock Songs of All Time'

In November 2025, Collider published its ranking of the "25 Best Classic Rock Songs of All Time." That list included titles from icons like David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Who, Prince, Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, and Queen. Alongside tracks from those legends, the Cream song "Sunshine of Your Love" was ranked at No. 24.

There is a very good reason why "Sunshine of Your Love" has seemingly appeared in an endless list of movies and shows. The track somehow instantly evokes a mood in the listener that is relaxing and psychedelic while simultaneously energizing in a fascinating way. Of course, nobody could examine the song without focusing on its epic opening guitar riff and solo.

'Sunshine of Your Love' Features One of the 'Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time'

In January 2023, Guitar World published a list of the "greatest guitarists of all time" and ranked Eric Clapton at No. 5. Listening to his iconic performance on "Sunshine of Your Love" makes it very easy to understand why. His iconic solo from this song doesn't feel the need to be exceedingly fast. Instead, it is a melodic piece of music that takes its time while captivating the ear.

In August 2024, Gibson published an article and video arguing that the song features one of "the greatest guitar solos of all time." It noted that it can be so hard to master that the company released a video to teach guitarists to recreate its magic.

"Sunshine of Your Love" also features a truly compelling opening bass riff from Jack Bruce that perfectly complements the song. In fact, the instantly recognizable opening may have left the greatest cultural footprint on pop culture of any part of the song.

Who Ranked Cream the Greatest Supergroup of All Time?

Cream was a short-lived supergroup composed of Eric Clapton from The Yardbirds, Ginger Baker, and Jack Bruce from Blues Incorporated and the Graham Bond Organisation. The trio was even identified as the first supergroup by a November 2025 Loudwire article. According to one recent ranking, they were also the greatest of all time.

In May 2026, Louder Sound published its ranking of the "best supergroups in rock history," and named Cream at No. 1. Similarly, WatchMojo named the trio as the top supergroup in 2013. If that wasn't impressive enough, Rolling Stone and Consequences.net both ranked Cream as the second-best supergroup in separate rankings. Those lists and others prove that even decades after it formed, the rock band continues to get respect from experts.

The 8 most intense guitar solos ever recorded - ranked by emotional impact

There's a particular kind of silence that follows a great guitar solo. Not the silence of an ending, but the silence of a listener trying to process something that moved faster than words. Some solos dazzle with speed and technique. Others do something rarer: they reach through the speaker and grab you somewhere deep, somewhere you didn't even know was accessible through an electric guitar and a few feet of cable. This list focuses on that...
