In May, when the calendar revealed that it was 100 days until South Carolina kicked off the season, I posted a story on GamecockCentral entitled “100 predictions for the 2026 Gamecocks.” Now, that countdown is down to just 45 days.
The prediction paired with day 45 read, “A freshman wide receiver will earn a spot in the crowded receiver rotation for the Gamecocks.”
Let’s break down that prognostication.

The candidates
South Carolina has a lot of players who could contribute in the wide receiver room this fall. Nyck Harbor, Jayden Sellers, Nitro Tuggle, DJ Black, Mazeo Bennett, Donovan Murph, Jayden Gibson, and Charly Mullaly are the non-freshmen at the position.
That still leaves six freshmen.
Malik Clark, Jordon Gidron, Lex Cyrus, and Jackson Repp redshirted in 2025. Sequel Patterson and Stone Furrey joined the program in the class of 2026 and will be true freshmen.
Frankly, finding snaps won’t be easy for the freshmen. Harbor, Sellers, and Tuggle are virtual locks for the rotation. Black, Bennett, and Murph also seem likely. Will the Gamecocks play more than six? Even if they do, Gibson and Mullaly are veterans, potentially giving them a leg up for playing time.
Clark, Gidron, Cyrus, and Patterson are former four-star prospects. Patterson was even in line to be a potential five-star in the 2027 cycle before reclassifying. Furrey and Repp are less likely to hop in the mix this fall, but both have speed and route-running ability on their side.
Clark played a little in 2025 and might be the most likely of the freshmen to play. However, Cyrus and Patterson are potential slot guys, so if snaps open up inside, they could become candidates.
South Carolina’s freshman history at receiver
One thing potentially playing in the youngsters’ favor this fall is that South Carolina has a history of playing freshman receivers.
Last season, Jayden Sellers, Donovan Murph, and Brian Rowe played legitimate roles for the USC offense. The year before, the Gamecocks trotted out true freshman Mazeo Bennett and redshirt freshman Vandrevius Jacobs a lot.
Going further back before the Shane Beamer era began, Shi Smith and OrTre Smith played in 2017, and Bryan Edwards had a big first year in 2016. Under head coach Steve Spurrier, players like Sidney Rice, Kenny McKinley, Tori Gurley, Alshon Jeffery, Ace Sanders, Bruce Ellington, Damiere Byrd, Shaq Roland, and Pharoh Cooper played a lot as true freshmen or redshirt freshmen.
“Back in the day,” other names like Jermale Kelly and Zola Davis were Freshman All-SEC performers, too.
Naturally, it doesn’t require a player turning into a star to earn a spot in the Gamecocks’ rotation at receiver. That is especially true considering the fact that the rotation could be a large one.
