The Gist

  • Colin Jost revealed exactly how you’re supposed to pronounce his wife Scarlett Johansson’s last name.
  • An audience member on Pop Culture Jeopardy! asked if it’s with a “Joe” or a “Yo.”
  • “I certainly say Joe-hansson,” Jost clarified, though he admitted that he rarely, if “ever” says her last name.

Colin Jost is clearing up any misconceptions about his wife Scarlett Johansson’s last name. During a taping of Pop Culture Jeopardy!, an audience member asked the comedian if it’s pronounced “Joe” or “Yo.”

“I don’t know, I’ve never met her in person yet,” he joked. “So, I want to hear how she says it.”

“I certainly say Joe-hansson,” Jost clarified, admitting that he rarely, if “ever,” says her last name.

He and Johansson married in 2020 and share a 4-year-old son named Cosmo. The actress also has an 11-year-old daughter, Frankie, with her ex-husband Romain Dauriac.

Jost went on to share some fun facts about his wife’s ancestry. “Originally, she’s Danish,” the Saturday Night Live star explained. “Her family is a mix, probably went back and forth between Denmark and Sweden, so it was definitely Yo-hansson originally.”

“I was probably Yost in Germany, but now that’s all long forgotten,” he said in jest. “We changed together. All of our ancestors coordinated and said, ‘Let’s get them together.’”

Last year, Johansson opened up about how her relationship with Jost started off on the wrong foot. Co-hosting a segment on Today in December, the Lost in Translation star described their “weird” interaction in detail.

“My first date with Colin, honestly, nobody ever really asked me out before,” Johansson told anchor Jenna Bush Hager. “I’m telling you. People say that, but it’s true. I was a serial monogamist and I just never got the traditional, ‘Hey, would you like to have dinner sometime?’”

Jost asked the Jurassic World star out back in 2017, though the eventual couple first met in 2006.

“We went to an Italian restaurant in the East Village. It was a lovely date,” Johansson explained. “We had dinner at 8 p.m. or whatever, and then afterwards, he was like, ‘I’m meeting friends, let’s go grab a drink.’ And I hadn’t dated basically ever, and so I was like, ‘I have to go now. I need to leave.’”

“I got home to relieve my babysitter and it was like 9:36, and she was like, ‘Why are you home?!’” Johansson added. “I was like, ‘I went on this date, and it was...’ I just felt so flustered.”

“Later on he was like, ‘I totally thought that was it. You were acting so weird,’” she concluded. “I panicked. I don’t know.”
