Nobody expected a Kansas City Chiefs rookie wide receiver to become the talk of the offseason this quickly. Yet, fifth-round pick Cyrus Allen, selected 176th overall by Kansas City during the 2026 NFL draft, has done exactly that.
“As a route runner, that guy is already there in terms of what the Chiefs need, and I think that’s what’s going to get him on the football field quicker than most rookies,” said KSHB-TV producer Nick Jacobs, on the 32 Beat Writers podcast.
While Jacobs believes Cyrus Allen is the perfect piece for the Chiefs’ receiving puzzle, Sports Illustrated’s Justin Melo called him one of the Chiefs’ potential draft steals. Melo noted that Allen has the talent to compete with any receiver in the league.

The wide receiver entered the NFL after spending one season at the University of Cincinnati, where he recorded 51 receptions for 674 receiving yards and 13 receiving touchdowns.
Those 13 touchdowns from him set the single-season program record at Cincinnati.
Allen started his collegiate career at Louisiana Tech in 2022. He then transferred to Texas A&M in 2024 and eventually settled down in Cincinnati in 2025. At the end of his collegiate career, he earned an All-Big 12 Second Team selection.
Expectations are sky-high for the young wide receiver. While everyone is lining up behind him, where does Allen stand in Kansas City?

Cyrus Allen turned heads during the Chiefs’ 2026 OTA’s and minicamps. The rookie earned valuable 7-on-7 reps alongside Patrick Mahomes.
Reportedly, the rookie WR caught more passes in team drills than any other receiver between Day 1 and Day 2 of mandatory minicamp practices.
A to Z Sports NFL insider Charles Goldman believes that Allen being in sync with Patrick Mahomes is a strong indication the Chiefs are serious about giving him playing time this season.
“They want him to have a foundation to build upon with the starting quarterback when he is cleared for 11-on-11. Allen isn’t without his rookie blemishes, but everyone can recognize the promise here,” wrote Goldman on July 19.
It’s still too early to make a final judgment, but analysts and his performances so far point in the right direction. That said, what do you think of him?
