Celtic are now said to be pushing for a deal to sign a new midfielder, and there could be more to come.

Celtic are said to be closing in on the signing of a new midfielder, and two more signings could follow quickly after, according to one report.

Bhoys fans need no reminding of the frustrations of this transfer window, with the club having failed to inspire with their efforts so far. Just one new signing has been made, and Martin O'Neill will be quietly furious given the warnings he sent over this squad needing to be strengthened significantly.

Exits are likely, and Daizen Maeda will be the first to go, and with less than two weeks to go until the start of the new season, Celtic have anything but a settled squad.

But a new signing could be inbound, and we could see a flurry of new recruits rock up at Paradise.

Celtic close in on the first of three new signings

According to TeamTalk, Celtic are now closing in on the signing of Paderborn midfielder Mika Baur. It's claimed personal terms have already been agreed and that Baur is on his way to Glasgow to have his medical and finalise a deal.

Celtic are in need of a new midfielder, with Arne Engels set to leave, and they will likely need to strengthen further as well as replacing Engels.

Baur will help with that process, and it's reported elsewhere that a fee of around £4million will be paid.

More Celtic signings to come

The report also claims Celtic are in talks with AEK Athens full-back James Penrice, who was previously with Hearts. The Bhoys need a back-up for Kieran Tierney after deciding not to re-sign Marcelo Saracchi, and Penrice is seen as a genuine option.

Penrice is said to be open to the move having played more of a supplementary role in Greece over the last year.

Elsewhere, Celtic continue to work on a move to sign Haissem Hassan, who impressed with Egypt at this summer's World Cup. The winger is currently with Real Oviedo in Spain, and he is said to carry a price tag of £7million.

Fortunately, Celtic are set to bring in £10million for Daizen Maeda, who is Ipswich Town-bound, so they can comfortably press ahead with a deal should they wish to.

Those three signings are currently the most likely for the Bhoys, and Baur is clearly the most advanced, with a medical now reportedly set to take place. Celtic fans will be pleased to see some business finally taking shape.
