Caseville voters will decide an 8-year school operating millage renewal on the Aug. 4 ballot, with about $2.77 million at stake.

Voters who live in the Caseville School District will have a millage renewal to consider on the Aug. 4 ballot.

The current millage rate is 14.7601 mills, or $14.76 for every $1,000 of taxable property value. Because of a reduction required by the Michigan Constitution of 1963, the district is asking voters to renew the rate limitation at 16.9673 mills, or $16.97 for every $1,000 of taxable property value. The additional mills would be levied only as needed to restore the required reduction.

If voters approve the proposal, the operating millage would continue for eight years, from 2027 through 2034. The money would be used for operating purposes. The district estimates it would collect about $2.77 million in the first year if the millage is approved. If voters reject the proposal, the proposal may re-appear on the November general election ballot.

"The proposal on the ballot is a straightforward renewal of our existing support," Caseville Superintendent Ken Ewald wrote in a notice posted by the district. "It is not an increase."

Caseville Public School Operating Millage Renewal Proposal

This proposal will allow the school district to continue to levy the statutory rate of not to exceed 14.7601 mills on all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, required for the school district to receive its revenue per pupil foundation allowance. The remaining 2.2072 mills are only available to be levied to restore millage lost as a result of the reduction required by the Michigan Constitution of 1963 and will only be levied to the extent necessary to restore that reduction.

Shall the currently authorized millage rate limitation on the amount of taxes which may be assessed against all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, in Caseville Public School, Huron County, Michigan, be renewed by 16.9673 mills ($16.9673 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation) for a period of 8 years, 2027 to 2034, inclusive, to provide funds for operating purposes; the estimate of the revenue the school district will collect if the millage is approved and 14.7601 mills are levied in 2027 is approximately $2,768,833.89 (this is a renewal of millage that will expire with the 2026 tax levy)?
