Brother of viral Olympic breakdancer Raygun learns his fate over international crypto scam

Former Olympic breakdancer Raygun's brother has been sentenced for scamming three victims in a cryptocurrency scheme.

Brendan Gunn faced Downing Centre Local Court, in Sydney, on Wednesday after being found guilty of scamming three investors, including a pensioner and teacher.

The 43-year-old from Brisbane pleaded guilty to dealing with more than $180,000 reasonably suspected to be the proceeds of 'suspected international scams that targeted Australian investors' in January.

Gunn is the brother of Rachael 'Raygun' Gunn, who gained international notoriety for her unusual breakdancing at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

His three victims lost a total of $181,000, the Daily Telegraph reported.

On Wednesday, Gunn was handed a 12-month suspended sentence and ordered to return to Queensland.

Acting Judge David Day had to lower the bail price to $3,000 after Gunn claimed he wasn't able to pay the initial $5,000 fee.  

The judge noted Gunn was part of a broader international network and 'simply holding up the Australian end to deal with financial institutions that the overseas traders would be unable to do'.

'Mr Gunn helped facilitate organised criminal activity,' Judge Day said.

'This kind of offending is facilitated by people living in the Australian jurisdiction, assisting perpetrators being out of the Australian jurisdiction, often in countries where there are difficulties in extradition.'

Gunn seemed remorseful for the impact his crimes had on the victims, the court heard.

'One of the victims is an older gentleman who was described as a pension-funded retiree, he would now be 74,' Judge Day said.

'Another victim was a high school teacher who, in February 2024, was 67 years old and may well have retired since.'

The third victim was a 59-year-old construction worker whose funds were 'impossible' to recover.

'These are people toward the end of their working lives. A 69-year old teacher, a younger fellow in the construction industry,' Judge Day said.

'I think he genuinely realises he has hurt at least three named people.'

Gunn has been unemployed for the last four years due to the charges against him.

He relies on permanent disability payments as his only source of income.
