A British woman who swapped London for Texas has revealed the five things she misses most about life in the U.K.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are 683,473 British people living in the United States today. Nadia Abraham, 31, is one of them.
Abraham, who lived in Mayfair, London, before relocating to Dallas, said the move came after she met her now-fiancé during a trip to the Lone Star State. The couple spent a year and a half in a long-distance relationship before she moved to the U.S.
While Abraham believes her quality of life is better in Texas, she told Newsweek there are still plenty of things she misses from home.
5 Things She Misses About U.K
Abraham told Newsweek: “Having sun almost all year round makes me so much happier than dealing with the London grey skies and rain!”
But she feels there’s some things that England just do better, they are listed below:
1. The Food Delivery Options
The first thing on Abraham’s list is Deliveroo, an online food, grocery, and retail delivery platform.
She said food delivery options in London were “incredible,” while the choices available to her in Texas are mostly limited to fast food. As a result, she rarely orders delivery now, saying meals often arrive cold and the variety doesn’t compare to what she enjoyed in the U.K.
2. Walking Everywhere and Public Transport
A close second is London’s walkability and public transport network.
Abraham said she took being able to walk around the city for granted when she lived in London. Whether she was heading out for lunch, meeting family or going for dinner, most journeys could be done on foot.
In Texas, however, she said having a car is essential.
She told Newsweek: “The thing I miss the most about living in London is definitely being able to walk virtually everywhere!
“In Texas if you don’t have a car you have to get an Uber as everything is super spread out.
“In London you can walk to a park, coffee shop, restaurant, gym, tube station in a matter of minutes.”
3. Being So Close to Europe
The third thing Abraham misses is the U.K.’s proximity to Europe.
Although she enjoys exploring different parts of the United States and noted that many destinations are only a few hours away, she said she misses having easy access to a variety of countries, cultures and city-break destinations.
4. British Pub Culture
Pub culture also earned a spot on the list. According to the Global Drug Survey, which polled more than 120,000 people across 36 countries and was cited by Sky News, people in the UK reported getting drunk more often than any other nationality—around 51 times a year, or nearly once a week—while being less likely than the global average to regret their drinking the next day.
Abraham reminisced about summer evenings in London, when streets are filled with people enjoying drinks after work, as well as cozy winter pubs with roaring fires, traditional snacks and groups gathered by the windows.
She described British pub culture as one of her favorite parts of living in the capital.
In fact, when asked what she misses most, Abraham told Newsweek that roast dinners and British pub culture top the list.
5. The U.K.’s History
Rounding out the list is Britain’s long history.
Abraham said she misses seeing historic architecture, cobbled streets and the English countryside. Living abroad has made her appreciate the country’s rich history even more, she said in a TikTok video that has over 91,000 views.
Outside the top five, Abraham said she also misses traditional roast dinners and British corner shops.
Could She Ever Move Back to England?
Although Abraham is enjoying life in the United States, she has not ruled out returning to Britain in the future.
“I could see us moving back to the UK later in life,” she told Newsweek. “I think one of the biggest reasons that would maybe see us returning is being close to my family and friends again, especially if we were to have kids, I’d want them to be close to their cousins and grandparents!”
Viewers Weigh In
Abraham’s video posted on July 9, has struck a chord with viewers, and many users related to Abraham’s reflections on life abroad.
One commenter wrote: “Girl, you missing home. There’s nothing better than home.”
Another said: “My DoorDash offers everything… the price we have to pay to live in walkable cities is crazy.”
A third user, who moved in the opposite direction, added: “I moved to Manchester. I miss seeing gallon of milk, eating ranch, coffee creamer [and] American Cheerios taste better to me.”
