Boone County firefighters rescue stranded fawn, reunite it with its mother

A weekend rescue in Boone County had a happy ending after firefighters saved a stranded fawn from the middle of a lake and reunited it with its mother.

According to the Boone County Fire Protection District, firefighters responded Saturday afternoon to a lake near the 3400 block of West Route K after fishermen spotted a young deer struggling to stay afloat.

The fishermen quickly called for help when they realized the exhausted fawn couldn't make it back to shore on its own.

When crews arrived, they found the fawn stranded in the middle of the water while its mother waited anxiously along the shoreline.

Firefighters entered the lake and swam the fawn safely back to shore.

The district said the young deer even accepted a helping hand from Lieutenant Workman before being reunited with its mother.

The rescue ended on a positive note, with firefighters reporting the fawn appeared unharmed.

Moments later, the mother and her young made their way back into the nearby woods together.
