A body was discovered inside a rental property owned by Conan Harris, the husband of U.S. Rep Ayanna Pressley on July 18. Boston police has started investigation, however, authorities have not yet identified the person who died, announced any arrests, or said whether foul play is suspected.

On July 18, officers responded to a call to investigate a person at a two-story home in Boston’s Mattapan neighborhood when the body was discovered. Detectives from the homicide unit have taken over the investigation.

According to officials, the case remains active as they work to find the cause of death. By the evening of July 18, crime-scene tape surrounded the seven-bedroom house. According to neighbors, the property had ‘heavy law enforcement.’

Harris and Pressley Offer Condolences

Hours after the news, Harris said his family was safe and thanked people who had reached out. In a Facebook post, Harris wrote, “Thank you for your care and concern. Our family is safe.” He added, “My heart goes out to the family that lost a loved one today in Mattapan.”

Pressley’s office also responded to the incident. A spokesperson told People that the congresswoman “extends her deepest condolences to the impacted family.” The spokesperson also shared that the house is a rental property and that Pressley is not its landlord. According to the city of Boston, Harris is the sole owner of the residence. Investigators have not linked either Harris or the Massachusetts lawmaker to the death.

The Home Was Up For Sale

Public property records show Harris bought the Mattapan home in 2021. But neither he nor Pressley lives at the address. The property is currently listed for sale with an asking price of $1.15 million. A real estate agent handling the listing said that the home has been on the market for about a month. The agent also said the current tenants have lived there for “a while.”

Harris previously served as a senior public safety adviser at Boston City Hall before launching his own consulting firm in 2019. Reportedly, at one point, the Mattapan property served as the business address for that company.

However, before settling in Boston, Harris served 10 years in federal prison on drug trafficking charges. After his release, he became a criminal justice reform advocate. Meanwhile, Pressley has represented Massachusetts’ 7th Congressional District since 2018 and is a founding member of the progressive House group known as “The Squad.” She and Harris married in 2014.
