Goose Hutchens becomes immediate contributor after reclassifying

Oklahoma softball coach Patty Gasso doesn't really need any help getting the best talent to join her program, but a helping hand from another OU coaching legend never hurts.

Tulsa World's Eric Bailey reported that former OU football coach Bob Stoops played a massive role in Gasso landing 2027 No. 1 recruit Juliana “Goose” Hutchens during her official visit to Norman. According to Bailey, Hutchens' first stop during her visit was at Stoops' house so her family could fish with the coaching legend and Gasso. Hutchens' father and high school coach, Johnny, is a big OU fan himself so was obviously in awe of the opportunity.

Sooner bred in Oklahoma, Hutchens was likely always destined to be a Sooner, but Gasso didn't want to take any risks by calling in Stoops for assistance.

OU announced last week that Hutchens will skip her senior year at Wagoner High School (OK) to reclassify from the 2027 class to 2026 so she can join the Sooners early next season in what is probably the biggest win of the offseason for Gasso.

Hutchens, even as a young freshman, has the talent to immediately compete for a starting job in the Sooners' already loaded lineup. She's primarily a catcher, which is a spot locked down by Kendall Wells, but she's versatile, and Gasso might be forced to find a way to get Hutchens' bat in the lineup.

As a sophomore in 2024, Hutchens broke the Oklahoma single-season record with 23 home runs, plus a .654 average with 45 RBI and 70 runs scored while dealing with opponents smartly pitching around her. She made the United States U-18 Women's National Team at only 16 years old the following summer and was tournament MVP as the team won gold at the World Baseball Softball Confederation. She's playing for the team again this summer.

Hutchens was the top recruit in the 2027 class before reclassifying. Now that she's bumped up, Softball America has ranked her as the No. 2 player in the 2026 class behind only outfielder Payton Westra, who will also be a Sooner and likely another freshman that cracks the starting lineup next season.

Hutchens reclassifying was news that Stoops celebrated on social media while knowing how massive that move is for Gasso's 2027 roster after missing the Women's College World Series this past season.

Stoops has only bettered his Sooner legacy since retiring as head coach in 2016. He's still been around not only the football program to provide input when needed, but has supported every sport on campus. He was part of the search committee that hired Roger Denny as OU's new athletic director to replace Joe Castiglione. He was also in Omaha last month cheering on OU baseball at the Men's College World Series during its national title run.
