Blue Jays SP Kevin Gausman can block trades to 8 MLB teams

Blue Jays SP Kevin Gausman can block trades to 8 MLB teams

The Blue Jays might not be able to trade Gausman to these 8 teams

As the MLB trade deadline approaches, Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman has become one of the most intriguing names to watch. With Toronto falling well short of expectations in 2026, rival executives expect the Blue Jays to listen on several veterans, and Gausman is among the biggest potential trade chips.

However, any team hoping to acquire the veteran ace will have to navigate one important obstacle: his no-trade protection. According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, Gausman has the ability to block trades to eight specific teams, giving him significant control over where he could finish the season.

Per Rosenthal, Gausman can veto a deal to the following organizations:

  • Cincinnati Reds
  • Milwaukee Brewers
  • Detroit Tigers
  • New York Mets
  • Athletics
  • Chicago White Sox
  • Pittsburgh Pirates
  • Seattle Mariners

If the Blue Jays reach an agreement with any of those clubs, Gausman would have the option to reject the trade. That doesn’t necessarily mean he would refuse a move, but it does mean Toronto would need his approval before completing a deal.

What It Means for the Blue Jays

No-trade clauses can dramatically impact negotiations. Instead of entertaining offers from all 29 other teams, the Blue Jays may have a smaller pool of realistic trade partners unless Gausman is willing to waive his protection.

That could steer Toronto toward contenders not included on his list, such as the Arizona Diamondbacks, Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves, or Chicago Cubs—all teams that could potentially use another starter.

If multiple clubs become involved in a bidding war, the Blue Jays would still be in a strong position to maximize Gausman’s value.

Despite Toronto’s disappointing season, Gausman remains one of the most accomplished starters who could be available before the deadline.

Veteran pitchers with postseason experience are always in demand this time of year, especially those capable of pitching at the top of a playoff rotation.

For contenders looking to strengthen their starting staff, Gausman represents an attractive option.

Toronto Faces a Difficult Decision

The Blue Jays entered 2026 expecting to compete for another American League pennant after reaching Game 7 of the World Series a year ago.

Instead, they have spent much of the season near the bottom of the AL East, forcing the front office to consider difficult decisions about the future.

If Toronto ultimately decides to move Gausman, his no-trade protection will become an important part of the process. While the Blue Jays can still negotiate with any team, the veteran right-hander will have the final say on eight potential destinations—a factor that could significantly shape one of the biggest pitching trades of the summer.
