BlackRock Inc. , Ford Motor Co. , Alphabet Inc   and workwear maker Carhartt on Tuesday launched the Alliance for America’s Skilled Trades, a new initiative aimed at expanding access to skilled trades training and helping address the country’s growing shortage of qualified workers. The founding members said they have already committed to supporting workforce training initiatives across 30 U.S. states.

The alliance seeks to expand awareness of careers in the skilled trades, invest in apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs and bring together businesses, labor groups, educational institutions and nonprofit organizations to strengthen the workforce pipeline. The companies said the effort is designed to create more pathways into high-demand careers while helping meet long-term labor needs.

Growing Demand

The companies said the U.S. could face as many as 2.1 million unfilled skilled trades jobs by 2030, including positions for electricians, technicians and builders. They said these workers are critical to infrastructure, manufacturing and energy projects while offering above-average wages and career opportunities that often do not require a four-year college degree.

Ford President and CEO Jim Farley called the shortage a “national crisis” and a “generational opportunity,” saying skilled trades workers are essential to industries that keep the U.S. economy running. Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet and Google, said meeting the country’s future infrastructure needs will require expanding the pipeline of skilled trades workers through collaboration across industry, government and nonprofit organizations.

AI Infrastructure Adds Pressure

The announcement comes as demand for skilled trades workers continues to rise alongside heavy investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure. In June, former White House AI and Crypto Czar David Sacks said the rapid buildout of AI data centers was creating shortages of electricians, fiber technicians and mechanical tradespeople, highlighting Meta Platforms Inc.‘s  $115 million America’s Workforce Academy as an example of the workforce training programs needed to address the gap. Ford’s Farley has also previously warned that AI is likely to increase demand for skilled technicians who build and maintain physical infrastructure. The broader labor market also points to a tightening supply of workers. Earlier this month, Indeed Hiring Lab Director of Economics Laura Ullrich said the U.S. labor force is shrinking because of demographic trends, including Baby Boomer retirements and slower immigration, making it increasingly difficult for employers to fill open positions despite ongoing demand for workers.

The announcement also comes as technology leaders increasingly argue that AI could increase demand for workers rather than eliminate jobs. Earlier this month, Amazon.com Inc.  founder Jeff Bezos said artificial intelligence would create a “labor shortage,” arguing that productivity gains would enable people to invent more, launch new industries and create additional demand for human talent instead of making workers redundant. Bezos said AI would expand what people can build rather than replace them, calling concerns that the technology would make humans “redundant” misplaced.
