The acclaimed fantasy trilogy continues to earn readers' admiration decades after its debut.

More than 30 years after Philip Pullman introduced readers to the world of dæmons, armored bears and parallel universes, His Dark Materials continues to be regarded as one of modern fantasy's defining works.

The beloved trilogy has been included on Goodreads' "Books You Can’t Live Without" list, a ranking voted on by the Goodreads community that celebrates the books readers consider truly essential. The recognition reflects the lasting impact Pullman's novels have had on generations of fantasy fans.

The trilogy began with Northern Lights, published as The Golden Compass in North America, in 1995 before continuing with The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. Together, the novels follow the courageous Lyra Belacqua as she embarks on a journey that spans multiple worlds, eventually joined by Will Parry in a story that blends adventure, philosophy and coming-of-age themes.

While His Dark Materials is often shelved alongside classic children's fantasy, its scope extends far beyond younger readers.

Pullman's richly imagined universe explores questions about free will, knowledge, faith and humanity, combining epic storytelling with complex ideas that have continued to spark discussion among readers and scholars alike. The result is a series that appeals to audiences of all ages, rewarding repeat readings with new layers of meaning.

"I didn't start with ideas - I never do - I have to start with a picture, a scene, something like that; something intriguing that makes me want to follow it and see what happens," Pullman told The Guardian in 2002. "That means that I don't make a plan, because it would prevent more than it allows. There has to be a lot of ignorance in me when I start a story!"

The trilogy has earned widespread critical acclaim throughout its lifetime. The Amber Spyglass became the first children's or young adult novel to win the prestigious Whitbread Book of the Year Award, while the series as a whole has sold millions of copies worldwide and inspired a successful television adaptation.

Its place on Goodreads' "Books You Can't Live Without" list speaks to the deep connection readers continue to feel with Pullman's work. Because the list is voted on by Goodreads users, it reflects the novels that have left the most lasting impression on members of the reading community.

For many fans, His Dark Materials is more than an epic fantasy adventure. Its unforgettable characters, imaginative world-building and thoughtful exploration of life's biggest questions have made it a series readers return to again and again.

"Lyra is a storyteller, but she's not a writer," Pullman told The Washington Post. "She doesn't do it for a living. But I do, and I know now that the way to write a book is to establish the habit of writing. Habit has written far more books than inspiration has. I'll put it like this: The muse that visits the poets and brings them inspiration — if she wants to find you, she needs to know where you are. If you're downtown drinking or watching football or something, she doesn't know where you are. She won't bother."

Decades after Lyra first set out from Jordan College, His Dark Materials remains one of the most celebrated fantasy series ever written. Its inclusion among Goodreads' "Books You Can't Live Without" is another reminder that Pullman's masterpiece continues to inspire new readers while holding a special place in the hearts of longtime fans.
