If the Los Angeles Angels trade Mike Trout, replacing him would be impossible.
They could fill his position in center field and move another hitter into his spot in the lineup. What they cannot do is find another player who carries Trout’s history, star power and connection to the franchise. That player isn’t sitting around Triple-A waiting for a phone call.
Nelson Rada is making his case in Triple-A
Nelson Rada, however, may be their best long-term option in center.
At only 20 years old, Rada is hitting .282 with a .384 on-base percentage and a .743 OPS for Triple-A Salt Lake. He has also scored 68 runs and stolen 28 bases, earning a selection to the 2026 Futures Game.
Those are impressive numbers for one of the youngest players at the highest level of the minors. Rada controls the strike zone, reaches base and immediately becomes a threat once he gets there. He could eventually give Los Angeles the type of traditional leadoff hitter that has largely disappeared from modern baseball.
There is also a strong argument that Rada is already the organization’s best long-term defensive option in center field.
He has the speed and instincts needed to cover the position. Rada won a Minor League Gold Glove in 2023 and has continued developing while the Angels aggressively pushed him through their system. Los Angeles sent him directly from Single-A to Double-A before promoting him to Triple-A last season.
The lack of power cannot be ignored
Rada only has two home runs this season and eight across more than 1,800 career minor-league at-bats. His game is built around contact, walks and speed. There is real value in that combination, but the lack of power gives him less room for error.
A .380 on-base percentage works beautifully without home-run production. If that number falls considerably against major-league pitching, Rada could become a defense-first outfielder whose offensive impact depends heavily on singles and stolen bases.
Rada does several things well that Los Angeles has lacked consistently. He gets on base, creates pressure and plays strong defense at a premium position. He also wouldn’t need to become the next Trout. Asking any prospect to do that would be a lovely way to bury him under expectations before his career begins.
Jo Adell would be the immediate answer
Although Rada offers the most appeal over the long haul, the Angels may decide he needs more time in Triple-A.
If Trout were traded during the season, the simplest move would be sliding Adell into center field. Adell is already on the major-league roster, has experience at the position and would allow Los Angeles to avoid rushing its 20-year-old prospect.
Adell likely wouldn’t provide Rada’s potential defensive value in center, but he brings considerably more power. The Angels could use him there temporarily, place another player in right field and allow Rada’s performance to determine when he receives his opportunity.
That would be a practical solution, even if it isn’t necessarily the permanent one.
Replacing Trout would require more than one player
There is also no guarantee Trout will be traded. He remains under contract through 2030, and any deal would require his approval because of his full no-trade clause.
If a deal happens, Adell would be the most likely immediate answer. Rada would remain the more intriguing long-term possibility.
Defensively, Rada may already be prepared for the opportunity. Whether his bat is ready—and whether it will ever produce enough power for an everyday role—is the question Los Angeles will eventually have to answer.
