A venerated knife brand’s restrained blade proves looks can be deceiving

Created in 2015 by master knife designers Jens Ansø and Jesper Voxnaes, GiantMouse has quickly established itself as a mainstay in the EDC and outdoor industries. And the brand’s catalog of stylish, functional cutting tools continues to grow.

But the latest launch, the GiantMouse Ace Zoobie, is special, albeit for a reason you might not realize. This performance-focused minimalist folder pays homage to the brand’s hometown.

Even if you’re familiar with GiantMouse’s Ace lineup, you might not be aware of one of its defining features. And that’s understandable, as it isn’t easily discerned, even if you have the knives in your collection.

Here’s the skinny: each knife is named after a locale (be that a bar, cafe, hotel, et cetera) the designers have visited and enjoyed. But this one is different, as the Zoobie is named after a particularly special spot: Zoobie’s Old Town Tavern, a hangout in the brand’s hometown of Lansing, Michigan.

According to the brand, the Zoobie is “the ideal everyday carry for grabbing a slice of pizza and enjoying it with an ice-cold beer at the neighborhood bar.” Essentially, it’s the perfect pocketknife for Zoobies (or whatever your particular regular spot is).

But what does that mean, exactly? While I can’t explicitly tell you GM’s intent, I can tell you what it means to me: it comes down to the knife’s blend of performance and styling.

Constant companion

The Zoobie is not a showy knife. It is relatively minimalist and lacks extraneous flair. However, its seemingly unassuming appearance hides some seriously reliable high-performance elements.

For instance, the 3.5-inch drop-point blade is Elmax steel, one of the premier super steels of the moment, beloved for its edge retention, corrosion resistance, toughness and much more.

That blade is mirrored by a titanium handle scale with an integrated frame lock — a lightweight, ultra-tough classic. And opposite that, on the presentation side, it has your choice of a G-10 or titanium scale.

The handle also has the brand name machined into its side, which could technically be called “flair”, but it isn’t just a garnish; it adds some grip, working in conjunction with the contoured shape of the knife to add security and stability when in-hand.

It’s an unassuming folder packing some serious heat. And that makes it special, even for GM.

The GiantMouse Ace Zoobie is now available for $255 with a G-10 handle and $285 for the full-titanium model.
