Dyson has released enough cordless stick vacuums over the years that it’s easy to assume each new model is just a slight upgrade over the last. But after spending some time with the V16 Piston Animal, I came away thinking it’s one of the brand’s more practical iterations. It refines the cleaning experience in a meaningful way for pet owners—including features such as stronger suction, smarter floor heads, and a dustbin that lets you fit more debris before needing to make a trip to the trash.
Like other cordless stick models, the V16 Piston Animal handles whole-home cleaning without the extra bulk of an upright. I tried this unit on hardwood floors, area rugs, and upholstered furniture to tackle everyday household dust and pet hair. It consistently felt powerful, maneuverable, and just plain satisfying to use.
One Head Doesn’t Have to Fit All
The biggest difference between the V16 Piston Animal and other Dyson cordless stick models is that it comes with an all-floor cleaner head and the Fluffy Optic cleaning head, giving you more variety depending on what you’re cleaning.
The all-floor cleaner head has two spiraling cones and a row of bristles that dug impressively deep into my area rug and carpet, with not a single strand of my long hair or my cat’s fur wrapped around the brush roll. This is a huge win if you have pets that shed, or you yourself do.
I could actually feel the vacuum pulling against the carpet as I cleaned, which gave me confidence that it was making consistent contact with the fibers. It picked up dirt and hair with ease and left the rug looking refreshed after just a few passes.
On hardwood floors, though, I found that same floor head tended to crush and spread lightweight debris, particularly pieces of litter, instead of collecting everything immediately (I could tell because this vacuum head also uses a green laser light for dust detection). In this case, the soft brush roll on the Fluffy Optic vacuum head was my go to. It performs beautifully on hardwood floors, and that familiar green headlight reveals dust that’s otherwise practically invisible in normal lighting, and once you see it, it’s hard to go back.
Suction That Actually Feels Different
Dyson rates the V16 at 315 air watts of suction, and it’s the strongest cordless stick vacuum I’ve used to date (for reference, most models fall somewhere between 100 and 150 air watts on basic settings, pushing 200 to 300 air watts on max or turbo settings).
Specs aside, the extra power is noticeable during use. Whether I was cleaning my area rug or transitioning onto hardwood, the vacuum maintained reliable pickup without feeling like it was struggling.
For furniture, the included pet hair attachment easily lifted fur and embedded debris from fabric upholstery, and even dislodged hair from a cat tree after weeks of buildup. If you share your home with pets and have a couch that’s a magnet for hair, it’s a genuinely useful tool.
The Vacuum’s Extra Features Tie Everything Together
Some of my favorite extras aren’t overly flashy; they simply make vacuuming less annoying. The LCD display tracks dust levels and particle pickup as you clean, providing a visual confirmation that you’re actually removing dirt instead of just moving it around. Certainly not an essential, but it is a nice bonus if you’re particular about household cleanliness.
I also really appreciated the redesigned dustbin, which has a compression lever that packs debris down as you clean. I could fit more dirt into the bin before emptying it, significantly reducing how often I had to stop and make a trip to the trash can.
The fully sealed HEPA filtration system is another great feature for pet owners, helping to trap fine dust and allergens rather than sending them back into the air while you vacuum.
Battery life is equally solid. It’s estimated to run for up to 70 minutes, and while I couldn’t perform a continuous runtime test, I was able to vacuum my bedroom, clean an area rug, freshen up my couch, and tackle some hardwood flooring with plenty of battery remaining.
A Couple of Small Complaints
Of course, the V16 Piston Animal isn’t without its quirks. It doesn’t stand up on its own, so if you need to pause mid clean, you’ll either have to lean it against something, lay it on the floor, or remount.
The cleaner heads are also narrower than what you’d find on a traditional upright vacuum. While that helps the V16 maneuver around furniture, get close to baseboards, and reach into tighter spaces, it also means cleaning large, open rooms will take longer.
Is the Dyson V16 Piston Animal Worth It?
This cordless stick vacuum feels like a thoughtful evolution to the array of pet-focused designs on the market today. Between the impressive suction, efficient floor heads, effective pet hair tool, and quality-of-life improvements like the dust-compressing bin and green laser lights, it makes everyday vacuuming feel more manageable.
It has a couple of common trade-offs, namely the inability to stand on its own and a narrower cleaning path. But if you’re looking for a premium pet-hair vacuum that confidently handles carpets, hardwood floors, furniture, and pet messes, the V16 Piston Animal earns its place among the strongest offerings yet.
