When wellness meets convenience, growth follows.
Tropical Smoothie Cafe has spent years building a business around smoothies, wraps, and bowls. Now the Atlanta-based chain finds itself in the middle of several of the restaurant industry’s biggest consumer shifts at once.
The brand surpassed $1.5 billion in systemwide sales last year, opened its 1,700th cafe in April, and expects to reach 1,800 locations this year. It has more than 900 cafes in its development pipeline, while first-quarter sales increased 10 percent year over year.
Loyalty membership has grown 25 percent, to more than 12 million members, and 44 percent of new franchise agreements in the last year were signed by multi-unit, multi-brand operators.
The rise of the “crave health balancer”
CEO Max Wetzel says the momentum starts with a changing consumer mindset: Customers no longer want to choose between indulgence and wellness.
“We happen to sit right in the middle of some of the biggest trends in food right now,” he says. “Consumers don’t want to choose between something that tastes great and something that helps them feel good about what they’re eating; they want both.”
Wetzel refers to that customer as a “crave health balancer.”
“When people ask about trends like GLP-1s, protein, fiber, or snacking, my answer is pretty simple: Those trends play directly into our strengths,” Wetzel says. “What’s growing? Protein is growing. Fiber is growing. Nutrient-dense beverages with functional benefits are growing. Snacking is growing. Portability is growing.”
Expanding the menu for all-day visits
Smoothies remain the center of the concept, but food has become a larger part of the story. Tropical Smoothie Cafe has long sold wraps, flatbreads, quesadillas, and other prepared foods, though many customers still associate the brand primarily with beverages.
Newer offerings, including protein smoothies, bowls, and toasted snack rolls, are designed to give guests more reasons to visit throughout the day.
Investing in the infrastructure behind growth
Wetzel says the company has spent the last two years investing in leadership, marketing, technology, operations, and franchisee support.
One major project is Smooth Operator, a new operating model rolling out systemwide.
Digital loyalty as a competitive advantage
Digital growth is another priority. Loyalty now accounts for roughly one-third of system sales, and active loyalty users per store have increased 60 percent since 2022. The company is also working on a more unified digital experience across kiosks, delivery, app ordering and in-cafe ordering.
“For us, loyalty and digital are about more than convenience,” Wetzel explains. “They’re about creating a stronger connection with guests and giving them more reasons to come back.”
Franchise growth signals confidence
Tropical Smoothie Cafe’s growth has been steady enough to attract experienced franchisees. The chain opened 165 locations last year, including 35 cafes in March alone.
“Sophisticated operators are looking for brands that have momentum, strong economics, and a clear path forward,” Wetzel says. “We’re seeing all three.”
