The Arizona Diamondbacks will look to win their third consecutive series when they face the Athletics on Wednesday, July 22, at Chase Field.

The Diamondbacks lead the Athletics, 9-2, as the series finale moves into the sixth inning on Wednesday, July 22, at Chase Field. Arizona has hit five home runs and took control of the game with a seven-run fifth inning.

Corbin Carroll and Nolan Arenado hit solo shots in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Diamondbacks a 2-1 lead. Jeff McNeil homered off Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly to tie it at 2 in the top of the fifth.

Kelly allowed two runs on five hits through five innings. He finished his day with three strikeouts and a walk.

The Diamondbacks took the lead again in the bottom of the fifth when Ketel Marte led off with a double, took third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. Gabriel Moreno followed up with a solo home run to center field that was measured at 427 feet with an exit velocity of 108.4 mph.

Carroll has 15 home runs, Arenado 14 and Moreno seven this season.

The Diamondbacks scored all seven runs in the fifth with two outs. After Moreno homered, James McCann hit a two-run shot and Ryan Waldschmidt hit a two-run homer of his own.

Waldschmidt's was his first career major league home run.

Gallen throws at Salt River Fields

Zac Gallen’s outlook remains murky after a visit with Dr. Neal ElAttrache, but it sounds like surgery is still not on the table for the Diamondbacks right-hander as he deals with an elbow issue, according to manager Torey Lovullo.

Lovullo said Gallen is “still waiting for some details” from ElAttrache, ostensibly as he determines a course of action in his rehab process.

Gallen received a second opinion from ElAttrache earlier this week.

“I do know that he came back to Salt River Fields and picked up a baseball and threw a baseball yesterday,” Lovullo said. “He wanted to see how everything felt. I think there’s a little bit of unknown right now, but I know Zac wants to pitch.

"I don’t think he’s been cleared for total baseball activity right now, but I think there’s some decisions that need to be made.”

Gallen reported feeling discomfort in his elbow after an outing against the San Diego Padres on July 7. He has not pitched since.

Gallen had been in the midst of the worst stretch of his career from a results perspective. Over his past 13 starts, he had a 7.66 ERA.

Carrillo with team, Jameson dealing with hip problem

Right-handed reliever Gerardo Carrillo arrived at Chase Field in the third inning on Tuesday, July 21, after being called up from Triple-A Reno that day.

"Worked hard, got put on the roster and forced his way into the big leagues," Lovullo said. "It's a really aggressive fastball. He can sequence really well with his right-handed pitching."

Right-hander Drey Jameson was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right hip impingement.

"He'd been trying to throw through it the last couple of days," Lovullo said. "At some point (Tuesday) during his throwing program we made the decision that it would be best to put him on the IL and give him 15 days to recharge and heal."

More of Drake and Bratt?

With the Diamondbacks down two starting pitchers, Ryne Nelson and Michael Soroka, left-handers Mitch Bratt and Kohl Drake are in the rotation.

It looks like both will get another start going forward. Drake pitched five solid innings on Tuesday, July 21, and Bratt came an out short of five innings in his last start.

"We're having those conversations right now," Lovullo said. "It looks very good that they'll both stay with us."

A's pay tribute to fallen prospect

Athletics players and staff wore green T-shirts at Chase Field with the name "Lasko" on the back, in honor of prospect Ryan Lasko.

Lasko, an outfielder at Double-A Midland, recently had spinal surgery for a fractured vertebra following a horrific collision with a teammate while going for a fly ball in a game.

Lasko did not have feeling in his lower half because of swelling in his spine, and faces a long rehabilitation process.

Players and staff all across the A's organization planned to wear the shirts for games on Wednesday.
