It is one thing to release a near-perfect FPS game, but to do so for free is a completely different challenge. For these games to be successful, they need to immediately hook you in with an engaging gameplay loop, and only then will you be willing to invest dozens of extra hours in them, and potentially pay for a few cosmetics along the way.
Some free games appear ideal for those who would rather keep their wallets closed, but the second there are barriers like character unlocks or content being gated behind paywalls, then the low price starts to look a whole lot higher. However, others hit the nail on the head from the get-go, letting you jump in and be on an even playing field with everyone else from the start, without any awkward additional costs lurking in the shadows.
Team Fortress 2
Monetization Done Right

- Weapon unlocks are "sidegrades" and still come from free drops.
Team Fortress 2 is about as bare-bones as a F2P shooter can be. The second you open the game, you have access to virtually every piece of meaningful content, from official maps to classes to the weapons that dictate how each match plays out, with the only minor caveat being the unlockable sidegrades that function more as fun or utility options than straight buffs.
There are, of course, ways of using real-world currencies, but they are entirely cosmetic, so if you are fine with a basic outfit, then there is no reason to ever whip out your credit card. I was pulled in from that first match, and with so much variety and so many different modes, it is hard to ever run out of ways to play or things to do.
Counter-Strike 2
An Economy Of Its Own

Counter-Strike 2 rejects every form of significant monetization, instead choosing to keep the core gameplay the same for the last decade and focusing instead on cosmetic drops and support from the community. Everyone is identical in the matches, which means that only the team who aims the best and uses the best strategies will come out on top.
What makes it even more impressive is its ability to remain timeless, despite several major engine updates. Players from the CS:GO era are still competing today, and it is nice to know that the very best can take tp a major stage and win it all with nothing but the default set of skins.
The Finals
Fighting With Aim, Not Wallets

The Finals feels unlike any other shooter out there, and a big reason for that is its dedication to its own ideas. Matches are fast-paced and play out on all levels of a destructible map, meaning that there are no camping objectives, and at any moment, a whole structure could come tumbling down.
There is also a nice progression loop, where you gain access to new weapons for each build, but no amount of money will ever give anyone a distinct advantage, unless you consider having a nice hat a mechanical buff. If you miss more chaotic shooters that still emphasize skill, then there are few better games out there today than The Finals.
STRAFTAT
Accuracy Is All That Matters

Sometimes, it is best to determine who is the better gamer with some simple shooter action, and STRAFTAT is one of the best places to finalize those wagers. It's so straightforward and to the point, and by removing all microtransactions and major progression systems, you can instead focus all your energy on winning the match.
I have spent hours in both 1v1 and 2v2 matches, dueling across hundreds of arenas, and I still come back to it now and then due to the purity and responsiveness of the experience. It's a classic PvP shooter that strips things back to a simpler time when fun and action were all that mattered.
Unturned
Straight Into The Outbreak

- Heavily community-driven.
At first glance, Unturned's blocky visuals make it easy to underestimate. However, beneath its basic appearance lies one of the most feature-rich free shooters available, thrusting you into a world where you can scavenge for supplies, build bases, fight zombies, engage in PvP, and explore massive community-created worlds packed with content.
Its longevity speaks for itself. Years after launch, the game remains one of Steam's most successful free survival games thanks to regular updates and an active community that continues to fill the servers with maps and additional modes to play. Few FPS titles offer the same amount of freedom, replayability, and variety, but in this case, all of that exists without having to spend a single dime.
Fistful Of Frags
The Much Wilder West

Fistful of Frags stands out from the crowd because of its commitment to delivering an authentic Wild West gameplay experience. The weaponry consists of everything from rifles to bows, and there is a lot of weight behind every shot, meaning you have to be very patient and careful to find any success.
That slower, more deliberate pace means the matches feel rewarding in a way that most other shooters never come close to. Winning a duel is immensely satisfying, and once you're done clearing out a saloon, there are plenty more hungry players to hunt down and show who's boss.
Planetside 2
The Purest Form Of Sci-Fi

Even more than a decade after release, PlanetSide 2 remains one of the most ambitious FPS games ever created. Scale is everything, as you are thrown into enormous conflicts where hundreds of soldiers are all battling on the ground and in the sky to control several sprawling continents simultaneously.
The size of the battles transforms every fight into something memorable. Rather than playing through a few small gunfights, you get to live an entire war firsthand. A game of this size would command a steep price tag today, but somehow, we get to play it completely for free until the end of time.
Double Action: Boogaloo
Bullet-Time Chaos For All To Enjoy

Double Action: Boogaloo is built around one simple idea: making every player feel like the star of an over-the-top action film. You are basically a juiced-up stunt double capable of diving through the air, sliding across floors, and eliminating opponents in slow-motion shootouts, and as absurd as the gameplay is, there is still a huge skill element underneath all the chaos.
There is as much of an emphasis on mastering the movement as on your accuracy, and after playing in a lobby full of locked-in players, you will never want to put the game down. Although it never achieved mainstream popularity, I would argue it still deserves recognition today for dedicating itself to a unique concept and putting it out there for free.
