On this day 57 years ago, the very first track on what some consider to be the "greatest rock album of all time" began recording.
July 21 marks an important day in music history for many reasons. It marks the release of Guns N' Roses' debut album Appetite For Destruction in 1987, along with the birth of singing legend Cat Stevens in 1948.
But July 21 also marks an important day for one of the greatest bands of all time, The Beatles. In 1969, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr began recording the song Come Together at Abbey Road studios in London.
The song took nine days to record, from July 21-30, and the effort paid off upon release on Oct. 6, 1969. It reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart. It also became the opening track on what many consider The Beatles' best album.
Come Together Featured in Historic Album Abbey Road
Abbey Road became arguably The Beatles' best album they ever created, even topping some of the "greatest rock albums of all time" lists, beating out the likes of The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin.
Released on Sept 26, 1969, Abbey Road became the 11th and last album The Beatles ever recorded together. But it sure was a good one, remaining the No. 1 album in the UK for seventeen weeks, and spending 11 weeks as the No. 1 album in the U.S.
The two-sided album featured 17 songs, including hits such as Here Comes the Sun and Something. But it was Come Together, the album's lone single, that opened Abbey Road.
