Does this power set mean the It villain is Stephen King’s most powerful monster? Not necessarily.
The Stephen King bibliography crafted a complex universe that includes other mighty monsters. Figures like Randall Flagg, The Crimson King, and Maturin are just as almighty as Pennywise, or more. From superpowered beings to cosmic entities, these Stephen King monsters would give the clown a run for his money.
Randall Flagg Has No Real Weakness
At first sight, Randall Flagg looks like a regular man, but this couldn’t be further from the truth, which explains why he's such a difficult character to adapt. Flagg, whom King describes as “a devoted servant of the Outer Dark,” can control animals and humans, possesses necromantic abilities, and has precognition, as well as something similar to magic. Add in his thirst for blood, and he’s quite a dangerous man.
Flagg, who also goes by Ramsey Forrest, Richard Fry, and the Man in Black, uses all these abilities to try to end civilizations by unleashing plagues and natural disasters over them while also inciting people into conflict. He can turn any group of living beings into his army — including dead people. While the clown can be killed with courage, Flagg has no weaknesses beyond his own arrogance.
Perse Is Basically A Greek Goddess
Who can be more powerful than an actual god? Perse is short for Persephone, the Greek goddess of the underworld, who serves as the main villain in Duma Key, one of the many Stephen King books still waiting for an adaptation. In this book, the goddess is evil itself, terrorizing a group of people at Duma Key, starting with a young kid, whom she grooms to get back on the surface.
Perse commands an army of souls from the underworld — a nod to her role in Greek mythology —; she can shapeshift, put humans under her control, and even bestow abilities on others, like immortality. This villainess’ only weakness is freshwater, so the ocean is her prison, but beyond that, she’s truly almighty, sometimes even able to change reality itself. Pennywise can cast illusions to confuse his victims, but not actually modify the world around him.
The Crimson King Is Evil Incarnate
The Crimson King is the embodiment of evil itself. He’s the ruler of the “Outer Dark” and a demonic entity that basically has control over all evil happening in the multiverse. As the main antagonist in The Dark Tower, he basically wants to destroy it, welcoming chaos into the whole multiverse just for the sake of, well, bringing chaos into the whole multiverse.
The Crimson King isn’t a god, but he’s a godlike entity. He possesses telekinesis, telepathy, and reality-warping abilities. He can shapeshift, but he also exists in the abstract, which gives him a huge advantage against physical hits. He can also manipulate the weather and humans. While both Pennywise and the Crimson King are primordial, transdimensional entities, the latter isn’t constrained to a town. He has reached all over the multiverse.
Maturin Is the Anti-Pennywise
Contrary to other entries on this list, Maturin the Turtle isn’t evil. Instead, he’s the only benevolent cosmic entity that can go against Pennywise. In fact, the clown fears it. Maturin looks like a big turtle — at least to the human eye — and it has certain superpowers. For example, he possesses telepathy; he’s incredibly smart, as he holds answers to all secrets in the universe, and he’s nigh-invulnerable.
What’s interesting about Maturin is that it doesn’t have showy abilities beyond what Pennywise can do. Sure, it can create realities with a gesture as simple as a sneeze, but beyond that, it’s all about existing on the right side of history. The turtle represents creation, light, goodness, and wisdom. All things that go against anything Pennywise can handle.
Gan Is The Most Powerful Entity in the Stephen King Universe
Anything created by Stephen King among his extensive bibliography pales in comparison with Gan. This entity is the literal God — yes, with capital G — of King’s Cosmology. Gan is omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent. He’s absolutely invulnerable and exists through Avatars — some theories mention King himself as one in the lore.
Gan is the living embodiment of the Dark Tower, and he created all universes, time, space, and any cosmic entity that exists, including Pennywise. The clown wouldn’t even be able to speak a word against this individual before he blinks him out of existence. This would be true for any other entity in the Stephen King books, too.
