Overview
The 2026 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe fastback luxury coupe-sedan is in its swansong year, and is showing its age now. Its platform comes directly from the two-door 8 Series coupe and convertible, keeping the fastback roofline intact while adding four-door practicality. Rear headroom is an obvious constraint due to that aggressive silhouette, but the trade-off is a sports-car stance with actual trunk space. It comes with either a 335-hp 6-cylinder or 523-hp V8 engine. The 8 Series Gran Coupe draws buyers who want genuine performance and rear seats that can carry adults on longer runs.
What's New for 2026?
The 2026 8 Series Gran Coupe adds the M850i Edition M Heritage, a production-limited special model honoring the original E31 8 Series from the ’90s, of which only 500 will be made. Five historic BMW Individual colors are available for this model: Bright Red, Mauritius Blue metallic, Cosmos Black metallic, Oxford Green metallic, and Daytona Violet metallic.
It also gets Orbit Grey 20-inch wheels, black M Sport brake callipers, a carbon-fiber roof, a 16-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system, and a black full Merino leather interior with tri-color stitching. The M850i Edition M Heritage commands a significant premium over the carry-over M850i xDrive.
Exterior
Every Gran Coupe retains the M Sports Package as standard, and the illuminated kidney grille that activates on approach. The 840i and 840i xDrive wear 19-inch M double-spoke wheels; the M850i xDrive steps up to 20-inch M Y-spoke items. The Edition M Heritage adds its own visual identity through the changes described above and M tri-color accent stripes, separating it visually from the standard M850i xDrive even at a distance.
Interior
The Edition M Heritage trades the standard leather setup for model-specific Merino leather and Alcantara sport seats with M tri-color stitching. Its Alcantara headliner, matte carbon-fiber center console, and glass iDrive controller distinguish the cabin even further. BMW Live Cockpit Professional pairs a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 12.3-inch touchscreen across all trims, although Android Auto is still missing on every trim. Standard BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery, four-zone automatic climate control, and a panoramic sunroof are included regardless of the trim.

Verdict
The 2026 model year's defining addition is the Edition M Heritage variant, with an exclusive 500-unit production run. It offers a bespoke path to the most distinctive Gran Coupe ever built. Inline-six buyers get the better running-cost argument with 24 mpg combined, while the 840i xDrive adds all-weather traction for a slight premium. Against the Porsche Panamera and Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, the Gran Coupe still positions itself as the driver-oriented choice with the lowest entry price in the segment.
