16 modern home design trends people absolutely cannot stand

We recently wrote a post where people revealed the popular home design trends they can't stand (and will likely seem "outdated" very soon). In the comments, readers shared more modern trends they actually hate, and I'm sorry if your favorites are in the list. Here's what they had to say:

1."Granite countertops. Nobody who can afford granite likes the same color forever, so you waste a lot of money putting it in and taking it out. Plus, it requires as much or more work to take care of, and God forbid you drop anything glass on it from any height."

2."Hard flooring. Hardwood floors? Tile? Nice to look at, but add the requisite rugs, and old people with problems walking will slip on the wood/tile and trip on the rug. NO, THANK YOU. CARPET!!!!!"

3."Houses these days are too big, which means too much time cleaning and too much use of power to heat or cool. One thing I can't stand is walking into a home with nothing on the walls, everything is white or grey, and there's no personality. But what do I know? I'm just a professional organizer that lives in an older A-frame cottage that is all wood with nothing fancy, and it's pure heaven."

4."The bathrooms in modern homes are lacking. I've been looking for a new place for some time. The first thing I look for is the bathtub. If it's acrylic, I'm passing. If there is no bathtub, I'm passing. If there's no storage, places for towels, sheets, and blankets, I'm not interested."

5."Where did coat closets and utility closets go? Especially coat closets, where you can hang it up without having to go all the way to your bedroom. And why do I have to schlep to the garage to get a broom? And then vacuum? I'm not asking for ginormous space for it."

6."A farmhouse sink is not practical. I have a double stainless steel sink. Dishwashers use too much water, power, and time. I have a plastic tub in the wash side because it keeps the water hotter longer. I don't run water into the rinse side. I plug the rinse side and fill it with dishes as I wash. Then, I run water over them to rinse them and put them in the dish drainer and let them air dry."

"The water in the rinse side that has accumulated during rinsing is minimal as opposed to filling the sink and definitely NOT running the water while rinsing."

7."Barn doors. Try lifting one when it comes off the track, which happens constantly."

8."New homes often have no pantry in the kitchen. Why do they build places that don't have pantry storage? Let me put my year supply of sweet chili sauce somewhere less embarrassing than a crammed countertop."

9."No laundry room sinks. What happened to them? Where do you fill a mop bucket, wash the dog, or do any of the other things they are good for?"

10."Pedestal sinks. I hate them. They have no space for setting out toiletries or cosmetics."

11."Huge, freestanding bathtubs are the worst!"

12."What happened to wider staircases to allow a person to walk alongside another who needs a stair chair access? Why do homes have step-up or step-down rooms? Again, this doesn't work for multi-generational families with parents who are aging or have disabilities."

13."Excessive exterior pot lights that shine down from all along the eaves. So tacky. It looks horrible and is so much light pollution to the neighbors who have to look at it!"

14."Wood floors and soaking tubs. Not in my house."

15."That horrible jacuzzi in the bathroom. It occupies the whole space, making it difficult to clean."

16."Those plastic floors that look like grey wood. That just reminds me of splintery unfinished porches. If you MUST have plastic floors, they should be patterned, like tile or something. But they're nasty, cheap, and a fall risk with how slippery they are."

"And the dust kicking up in the air instead of staying on the floor until you vacuum! I don't get it! It's NOT cleaner — it's more dangerous and hyperallergenic. Why would you want hard floors??? And made of plastic that looks like terribly neglected wood??? Godawful."
