For the legendary Pistol Pete Maravich, basketball and faith eventually became the two defining pillars of his life. While basketball brought him fame, newspaper headlines, and admiration across the country, Maravich later admitted that the life he had lived during those years was far from the one he believed God wanted for him.
That realization eventually became so overwhelming that one night, in the early hours of the morning, Maravich broke down in prayer. He apologized to God for the life he had lived, confessing the sins that had weighed heavily on his heart for years.
Maravich knew he was in the wrong
Pistol Pete's struggles with alcohol and partying actually began before he ever reached the NBA. During his senior season at LSU in 1970, he developed a habit of drinking before games while continuing his party lifestyle.
That same year, Maravich was expelled from LSU after missing too many games. Unfortunately, entering the NBA did not change those habits.
If anything, the pressure that accompanied stardom, along with the frustration of never competing for an NBA championship, only deepened his struggles. Throughout much of his professional career, Maravich battled depression and alcoholism, problems that continued even after he retired.
Moreover, many biographers have suggested that the immense pressure placed on him by his father, Press Maravich, contributed to his anxiety, depression and eventual dependence on alcohol. Additionally, after losing his father to cancer, Pete entered one of the darkest periods of his life.
The 6'5'' guard continued drinking heavily while searching for meaning beyond basketball. The frustration was so agonizing that once, while running a small construction business in Louisiana, Pete contemplated taking his own life.
Amid that phase, there was one night when Maravich replayed all the mistakes he had committed and broke down, apologizing to God for wasting his years in alcohol and other such things. Put simply, his guilt was just unbearable.
"My eyes just popped open," Pete recalled. "Things started coming up in my mind. Every sin I had committed came out. My conscience was really bothering me. At 5:30 in the morning, I was crying. I thought, 'God, I've cursed you, I've used your name in vain, I've mocked you. I've had it with material things. Save me.'"
God spoke to Maravich
Interestingly, as Maravich poured out his heart in the prayers, he experienced God speaking to him. And in that moment, Pistol Pete realized the burden he carried was starting to wear off.
"God spoke to me that night," Pete continued. "I'll never compromise about that. It was a voice as clear as could be. It said, 'Be strong and lift thy own heart."
Perhaps his story serves as a reminder that even the most gifted athletes can carry invisible burdens. Fame, success, and talent may bring admiration from the outside, but they cannot always quiet the struggles within. For Maravich, true peace came not from basketball accolades but from finding forgiveness and a renewed sense of purpose through his faith.
